SOCIAL ARCHITECT

Imagine giant, fifteen-foot waves crashing onto a glacial edge with a velocity that shakes the earth below—all while the wind whips fields of snow tossed from the sky. This duality is what transpires every winter along the lip of Lake Superior and it is absolutely stunning. Most northern lakes freeze over in winter. Not this one. Here, the universe couples open sapphire water and the white furry snowstorms. It is, to me, one of the secret wonders of the world.
PIANO
Connecting to the sound beneath my survival. Yes. That's what piano is for me. I've never known the formal keys & chords—something I'd love to remedy at some point—but in the meantime, it remains an absolute joy (and challenge) to hear & feel my way through into re-making sounds and songs that move me.
VIDEOGRAPHY
Though I'm a novice, few things bring me more joy than stitching together clips of life and light—finding the perfect melody to match the magnitude of the moment. As much as I love to put words to paper, videography is such a unique medium that allows me to layer visuals, sound and words; a digital form of collage that I can get lost in for days. As much as I fear technology is cramping humanity, I find myself endlessly grateful for all of the advancements (thank you iMovie!) that allow so many to pour into making digital magic.
HOCKEY
Is there anything better than carving through the ice on a frigid winter's day? I love everything about hockey. The sounds. The smells (well, most of them...LOL) Team sports have always been a way of life for me; a mode of movement; a way to challenge my body while orchestrating and executing with people I love. Yet hockey, for me, has always meant something more. Why? Because it's a sport and. It's a sport and it's a way to engage with the natural world. A way to synthesize movement and transcendence—a portal to another universe. During grade school and high school, my favorite days started on the ice at 5am, music pouring through my headphones and purpose shifting through my veins. Skating is an art form and a physical way to connect with the quiet yet surging rhythm of the world.
LANDSCAPES
I'll admit - I didn't much appreciate landscapes, nature, before I met my wife, Melanie. My family didn't spend much time embedded in the great outdoors, so it wasn't something I was accustomed to. Beyond this, I had such an affinity for people that I couldn't quite find a poetic connection to the planet. Over time, though, Mel helped me experience (through prose and place) that these two things are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they balance one another so beautifully if you let them. I am so grateful to now have such a deep reverence for land, soil, wildlife, waves, water, fire, flowers. Taking in the elements is one of the ways that I find, and keep, my equilibrium in this world.
PHOTOGRAPHY
There's nothing fancy here; all of my shots are taken with an iPhone. I keep swearing to myself that I'll learn how to really engage in photography someday; invest in a legit camera... but I will say that I can viscerally remember the first day I purchased my iPhone. Of all the rad shit it could do, what I was totally and completely enamored with was its camera. I could not believe the quality; all in the palm of my hand! Though I'd prefer the process and mechanics of photography captured with real film, processed in a darkroom, I am so happy that this modality for capturing and framing the world exists.
